Description

Wat Bowonniwet (Bowonniwet Vihara) is a first-class royal temple of Ratchavora type, located in Phra Nakhon District, Bangkok. Originally built during the reign of King Rama III by Prince Bowornnart, the Director of Bowornsthan Palace, it was constructed near Wat Rungsisutthawat. The two temples were later merged into one. This temple holds great significance in the history of Thai Buddhism, particularly because King Rama IV, while still ordained as a Buddhist monk under the name Vajiranyana Bhikkhu, presided over Wat Bowonniwet before ascending to the throne. Wat Bowonniwet is also recognized as an important center of the Thammayuttika Nikaya, which played a major role in the reform of Buddhist education and monastic practice throughout Thailand.
