Description
Wat Bowonniwet Vihara is an important royal temple at the heart of Bangkok and has been connected to the Thai monarchy and senior Buddhist prelates of high rank. The temple was built during the reign of King Rama III by the Department of the Grand Palace. Later, during the reign of King Rama IV, while he was a Buddhist monk, he resided at and served as the abbot of this temple. Wat Bowonniwet Vihara therefore played an important role in the establishment and propagation of the Thammayut sect in Thailand. Within the ordination hall is enshrined Phra Phuttha Chin Sih, which is a principal Buddha image of the temple.
